Tracking Green Hydrogen Projects—Jilin: Launch of China's First Full-Chain Demonstration Project for "Green Methanol—Bunkering—Shipping"

On October 30, 2025, China's first green methanol demonstration project, which integrates the entire chain of "green methanol production-fuel refueling-deep-sea shipping," commenced construction in Siping, Jilin. The project is led by SPIC Jilin Electric Power Co., Ltd. and jointly developed by COSCO Shipping and Shanghai International Port Group.

Aligned with the strategy of "accelerating the development of new quality productive forces," the project adopts a coupled technology of "wind power for green hydrogen production and biomass gasification for syngas production," establishing a flexible and synergistic "electricity-hydrogen-chemicals" system. Hydrogen is produced and stored when wind power is abundant; stored hydrogen is used during short-term windless periods; and chemical production loads are adjusted during extended windless periods, achieving the breakthrough of "no shutdown during windless conditions" and effectively addressing the volatility of new energy. Upon completion, the project will produce 197,200 mt of green methanol annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 300,000 mt per year, both promoting the chemical industry's independence from fossil fuels and providing a closed-loop solution for shipping decarbonization.

Green methanol has become an ideal fuel for shipping decarbonization due to its ease of storage and transport as a liquid at room temperature and pressure, absence of sulfur oxide emissions during combustion, and low carbon footprint throughout its life cycle. This project is the first to innovatively couple Jilin's wind and solar power resources with biomass resources, establishing the entire chain "from wind to methanol" and providing a replicable model for the "green hydrogen+" strategy.

The project significantly empowers regional development, directly creating over 500 jobs during construction and operation, driving the development of industrial chain clusters such as biomass storage and transportation and equipment manufacturing, and attracting energy and chemical professionals from the southeastern coastal regions to return to their hometowns, thereby supporting Jilin's "attracting talents back" initiative. As a key component of SPIC's "Hydrogen Continent Hyglobal" brand, the project not only opens up the green energy market for shipping but also explores a new synergistic path where new energy empowers traditional industries and agricultural resources facilitate energy transition.
